A Strategic Approach

For the first time in history, communicators now enjoy a measurement lifecycle rooted network theory, behavior and sentiment analysis, and far-reaching raw data. Social media has exposed previously unobtainable metrics to capture and measure. Target audiences no longer hide their conflicting interests and desires from view.

Communications Strategy

Here’s a social media strategy I’ve used to reach positive outcomes:
  • Monitor – Track keywords important to your mission & have a crisis warning system
  • Engage – Find influencers and reach out! Set goals and keep track of your progress.
  • Measure – Evaluate your accomplishments at a high level and support the findings with KPIs.

A monthly report may help your organization track progress. You’ll include key performance indicators, your gut feelings about certain topics, and excerpts from online posts you’d like to highlight:

  1. Format a template document with content areas reserved for KPIs, trend lines, and your comments.
  2. For a particular date-range, insert data about from social media monitoring tools.
  3. Write comments about the important numbers to add meaning.
  4. Copy some tweets or forum posts into the report to highlight a particular topic.
  5. Based on your findings, conclude the report with messaging you plan to engage audiences with.

The following tools allow you to search online conversations:

  • PeopleBrowsr
  • Filtrbox
  • Social Mention
  • Board Reader
  • Facebook Search
